The RBD Severity Scale

The RBD Severity Scale, also known as the "IRBD-SSS" (International REM Sleep Behavior Disorder Study Group Symptom Severity Scale), is a tool used to assess the severity of REM Sleep Behavior Disorder (RBD) symptoms by evaluating the frequency and intensity of dream content, vocalizations, body movements, and potential injuries experienced by the patient, often with input from their bed partner as well.

📋 Key points about the IRBD-SSS: The scale typically includes items regarding dream content, vocalizations, sudden movements (like hitting or kicking), and self- or partner-inflicted injuries.

🛏️ Patient and Bed Partner Versions: There are separate versions for the patient to self-report their symptoms and for their bed partner to report what they observe during the patient's sleep.

💯 Scoring System: Each symptom is rated on a scale based on frequency (e.g., never, rarely, occasionally, frequently, very frequently).

🩺 Clinical Use: The IRBD-SSS helps clinicians evaluate the severity of RBD symptoms, monitor treatment effectiveness, and make informed decisions regarding management strategies.

This scale is already completed by NAPS participants, and a recent publication validated the IRBD-SSS in a different cohort.
